Battle Report- 1600 point Ultramarines Vs Relictors

Another weekend, another confrontation between the two mighty armies of the Ultramarines, and Relictors. The battle took place over the shattered remains of a once proud imperial city, three key objectives littered the city, with both armies looking to capture them from the opposition.

We decided to go initially for a 1500 point battle, however we opted to increase that slightly to 1600. For this battle we went for a similar approach, infantry heavy, tank light due to the built up manner of the battleboard. The Relictors force comprised of 2 Scout squads, 1 armed with sniper rifles, two Tactical squads, a Dreadnough in a drop pod, a 5 man vanguard squad, 8 Assault marines and a Thunderfire, Devastator squad and his new Whirlwind giving artillery support. The army was lead by a captain and chaplain both with jumpacks. Only the dreadnought in the drop pod was held in reserve.

The Ultramarines had a slightly similar force, only the Whirlwind and a Tactical squad was deployed, with the remaining force - an Ironclad and Venerable Dreadnoughts in drop pods, 5 man Vanguard and Assault Terminators and a 10 man Tactical squad with an Epistolary Librarian mounted in a third drop pod.

As Siph has only one drop pod painted, the drop pod assault was always going to be one sided. The dice off for table edge was won by Siph and first turn was secured by Pornstarjedi.
Turn One. The Ultra Drop Pods containing the Dreds crashed down into the Relictor Lines sowing confusion and a bit of dread [two ;) in fact]. The Venerable opened up with his lascannons on the Relictor Captain gunning him down outright after his Iron Halo and Artificer Armour failed to protect (S9, T4 - instant kill). The Ironclad fired its Hvy Flamer and Melta Gun gunning down a Vanguard, a tactical marine and the Jump Chaplain after his Rosarius failed to save him.(Siph - one of those dice rolling 1's days again!) The turn also saw the whirlwind opening up, blasting incendiary missiles into the scouts located in the ruins, by the objective- however only one fell to the blast... Then the Ironclad charged into the remaining Vanguard squad, a lethal combat ensued. Due to the high armour of the Ironclad, only the powerfist sergeant could inflict any harm, however the sergeant was unable to penetrate the metal behemoths armour- the ironclad wasn't in a forgiving mood, and took another 2 marines down.
In response the Relictors hit back with drop pod of their own- aimed directly into the ultramarines deployment zone, the dp landed within the reach of the whirlwind, and tactical squad holding the objective. Other movement saw the tactical marines moving in to close on the Ironclad, the sergeant also had a powerfist- could the Ironclad survive? The whirlwind of the relictors fired upon the UM tactical squad moving forward from their deployment zone- however the shot missed by some way. The thunderfire had more luck, killing one of the marines. The razorback fired upon the venerable dreadnought, and inflicted a stunned result after penetrating the old one's armour. The newly arrived Relictor dreadnought wasted little time, and opened fire on the whirlwind, and tactical marines, the heavy flamer killing one marine, and stunning the whirlwind crew. Unable to engage the melee with ranged shots, a tactical marine armed with a melta gun fired upon the drop pod that housed the Ironclad, destroying it, and the precious locator beacon. The Relictor dreadnought then charged into combat with the whirlwind, this time the tank was destroyed. (Poor dice again for Siph...) The Ironclad was then charged by the tactical squad, with the hope that 2 power fists, were indeed better than one, and finally destroy the Ironclad, however the marines were unable to best the might veteran (who has a warhound kill to his name in single combat :0 Jedi) with the Ironclad claiming the lives of another 2 marines.

Turn 2.
Turn 2 saw the arrival of another UM drop pod, this time housing a 10 man tactical squad, and the Librarian. The DP landed in the middle of the board, with the marines splitting into 2 combat squads, also that turn saw the arrival of a 5 man vanguard squad which homed straight at the Relictors dreadnought. The turn also saw the now 4 man tactical squad move into position to assault the scouts that had infiltrated forward. The shooting phase saw the newly arrived tactical marines flaming the Relictor Combat squad that had sneaked by the ironclad, killing 2. The venerable dreadnought fired upon the whirlwind- but missed the tank from point-blank-range!! Close combat saw the ironclad again taking on all comers, this time felling a single marine. The Relictors in response could only immobilise the dreadnought. The other combat saw the UM tactical marines charging the scouts, and killing all 5. The vanguards were unable to penetrate the Relictor dreadnoughts armour.
The Relictors were now short in number, the assault marines moved into a charging position around the Ironclad- could a third power fist take the beast down? The whirlwind fired at the drop pod in the middle of the board, scoring a hit. the blast took out the drop pod, and 2 marines. The assault phase- two major combats were taking place, the first saw the Ironclad once again survive the attention of the Vanguard sergeant, the tactical sergeant (+1 tactical marine) and the assault sergeant (+ 6 assault marines) the other marines had to watch- due to being unable to penetrate. In response the Ironclad took the lives of another 2. Over the other side of the battlefield, the UM Vanguard Sergeant, armed with a thunderhammer, smashed the Relictor dreadnought with a might blow, catching a major power line- the dreadnought exploded, killing a vanguard who strayed to close.
Turn 3.
This saw the arrival of the Ultramarine Assault Terminators, however due to a mishap the terminators arrived miles from where they were expected to arrive (Siph was able to place them where ever he wanted) thus, the termie's were place way back into the UM deployment zone and effectively out of the game. The librarian moved into position to see the relictors combat squad and the Vanguards moved forward to try to get to the center objective. The second UM tactical squad moved away from the dead scouts, and moved to take position behind the center objective. The shooting saw the Librarian 'Smite' the remaining 2 Relictor Combat Sqd marines into pieces. The UM Venerable dreadnought took aim at the whirlwind and stunned it. The close combat again centred on the ironclad, could he survive yet another round... Incredibly, yes he could and took out another two assault marines for good measure!
The relictors turn 3, saw little movement, but lots of shooting. The land speeder moved into position and fired into the sole survivor of the tactical combat squad holding the center objective, however the multi melta shot hit, but did not wound the marine (Siph rolled a 1 to wound... lol) The thunderfire fired into the second combat squad holding the objective, and killing all. The scouts in the ruins tried to sniper fire the 3rd combat tactical squad moving toward the center of the board, however all marine stood firm. Again the close combat saw the Ironclad defy all odds, this time no marines were killed, the Ironclad was penetrated, and was only shaken for the next turn.
Turn 4, potentially the final turn. The Ultramarines moved forward with the Vanguard and terminators charging at full speed towards the Relictors, however it was going to take another turn or 2 to get anywhere close! The combat squad of tactical marines got into position, claiming the center objective, the sole surviving combat squad member from the second dp wave fired his multimelta at the razorback, the shot missed due to the smoke from the onboard grenade launchers. The Librarian charged the razorback and destroyed the tank in single combat, the Ironclad managed to survive another turn of combat, this time again killing another relictor!
Turn 4 for the Relictors- due to most of the relictors being tied up in combat with the Ironclad, or dead there was little of the force left, however the Landspeeder sped round into the center of the board to contest the final objective- and fired upon the 4 man tactical squad holding the objective. all 4 died under the combined weaponary of the multimelta and thunderfire. The Devastator Sqd near the Venerable Dred opened up with 4 Krak missiles, only one penetrated and shook the Ancient Warrior. (i know, bad rolling ...again! But this was because of the Venerable re-roll). The combat with the Ironclad again was a stalemate.
Siph rolled to see whether the game would go onto a 5th turn, however a 1 was rolled (typical). All finished another draw!!

Jedi- the man of the match has to be the Ironclad dreadnought. The ability to hold up virtually an entire army single handily was amazing. The initial turn was pivotal. Having two dreadnoughts arriving on turn 1, into the oppositions deployment zone was key to changing the course of the battle. Siph had to change his entire plans, and the dreadnoughts managed to take out both characters in the first turn-much to my enjoyment!

My typical throw!

Siph- well I never really got going. It was in my face from turn 1 and losing both characters was a bit of a blow. I do blame some part on the dice, who could penetrate an Ironclad over 5 times and still get nothing but an immobilised. But, you got to hand it to Pornstarjedi, those DP assaults are deadly and he knew it! We both learnt a few valuable lessons as well as had a good time. The Thunderfire proved a marine killer for me but the landspeeder kept me in it with a quick dash to constest the objective.

A great battle, the Ironclad will be getting several more honour markings!

Relictors Whirlwind

I have finally finished another Heavy Support choice for my Relictors growing Battle Company. I like the idea of a Whirlwind laying down suppresive fire over the heads of your own troops, and indirect fire at that.
The turret is fully moveable but I have fixed in the missile heads rather than bother with magnets for the Castellan missiles, or having half and half. The Smoke Launchers and Chain are from the Chaos Vehicle Frame, fitting in with my Relictors theme of dabbling with Chaos. As all my vehicles have, the Skull icon is from a Fantasy Shield sprue.
The huge skulls are taken from the Archaic Ruins and fit the Relictors Theme quite well.
It is my intention eventually to paint another Whirlwind and a Landspeeder with Command Frame Scanner to make a Suppresion Squadron Apocalypse Formation. The second will have the larger Castellan missile heads.

Relictors Assault Squad pt4 - Sergeant

I've been progressing quite well this week with the squad after months of nothing. Today i finished off the Sergeant, it is the FW Red Scorpion Assault Sergeant body with Chaos Vehicle Accessory Head and normal Marine parts. The skull shoulder pad is from Chaos Marauders i think?
He has been raised slightly on the base using chopped pieces of sprue and GW basing sand with a tiny fleck of flock as I always do. I used a shaved down skeleton skull to adorn the combat/storm shield, it is painted to match the same skull design on his powerfist.
The scroll work and purity seals and detailing on this mini are great, if not time consuming to get done. Here is a shot with the rest of the squad so far. As always I'm aiming for full ten man squads to complete my Battle Company. All Tactical Squads are done, just 7 Assault Marines and 2 Devastator Squads to do. One Devastator Squad will be using the new FW Iron Armour. This is the 5th Company, 8th Squad, hence the numerals on the vents (V and VIII).
And lastly is a comparison between the first Assault Squad Sergeant i did a while ago and now. I think my painting style and skill have developed over time which is always nice to see.

WIP Relictors Assault Squad pt3

I must be the world's slowest painter. Work continues at last on some of my Relictors after a hectic period. Thought I'd better update the blog at some point since my last post was way way back and I have the painting mojo back again. Yay!

The left and centre guys are newly done, the other two posted already. 4 down, 6 to go for this squad. Still got 2 to do from these guys twin squad but with Bleached Bone Vents and Weapons. But, I'm liking the dark feel of these for now...

The Beginnings of Hive Fleet Thorn

So its been decided that the Tyranids are going to be my weapon of choice but as much as I was looking forward to returning to my ‘Nids, my experience with them in the 2nd Gen era filled me with dread (but that could just be the Shadow in the Warp…) – namely buying and painting the same Termagaunt models 50 times over.

Luckily the advent of the plastic multipart boxes and eBay has made this a lot less painful than I first thought.

My general tactic for ‘Nids is to overwhelm the opposition with sheer numbers (no duh…), so after recapping what units I would need to create a usable 750 point list, I hopped online to begin putting together a swarm of gaunt broods with a light smattering of monstrous creatures.

Whilst the army is smaller than 1000pts, I would be running with a Tyranid Warrior Prime as my HQ unit of choice. Coming in at half the cost of a Hive Tyrant and giving a nice WS & BS boost to its Warrior brothers, I felt the Tyranid Warrior Prime was going to be more effective in the first few skirmishes whilst I was re-learning to play.

I have always been more of a painter than a player, but being over a decade out of practice, I wanted to keep my Hive colour scheme simple, yet effective.

What I have tried to go for is an organic look – with a mottled green flesh effect to make all of the units appear slightly unique (this isn’t uniform armour after all) and a dark carapace that goes from black through purple to green with yellow highlights. All this is topped off with a gloss varnish coat for an extra wet effect.

The carapace didn’t go to plan – my original vision was to reproduce the oily effect of a Scarab Beetle’s black carapace, but for some first attempts, I am generally pleased with the final results and it gives me something to work on.

Now I just have to get my WeeNids into a game.

Land Raider Terminus 'Invictus'

Hi all,

Firstly I would like to apologise for the lack of current posts on the Weemen site, Siph has been away with work and I have taken a new job which has seen me living in away from home each week, thus time for blogging has been reduced over the last few months.

I would like to welcome the6thdegree to Weeman, and look forward to seeing his posts on his tyranid army! (I can now paint up my dead nid's on my veterans to match the nid scheme!)
Following a recent post regarding the WIP of my Land Raider Terminus, I am proud to be able to show you the near finished project. The final parts will be to transfer up the tank, and add a couple of the forgeworld brass etchings to finish the 'titan killer'.
As you can see I opted to not use the standard GW terminus kit. I felt that the tank looked OK, but could look better with the way the weapons were positioned. Also the 'godhammer' lascannons could not be positioned correctly straight ahead due to the single lascannon sponsons. As discussed in the WIP, I found the inspiration from finding in my games drawer a LR with a predator turret sat on the chassis, - thus the invictus terminus was born!
I hope you like the results, I'm pleased with the way the tank looks. The tank itself looks bigger than a normal land raider, which was the effect I wanted. I have also given the tank Chronus- I mean, who wouldn't want 5 BS5 lascannon's with 3 twin linked re-rolls!!

Scuttling soon to Weemen; The ‘Nids!

Hi guys – I’m a long time friend of both pornstarjedi and the ‘Nids, and have been on the wagon and clean from GW’s addictive plastic goodness for about 11 years now.

Unfortunately, the combined efforts of pornstarjedi and a few other friends finally wore down my defences and once again my geeky side is exposed to the world of 40K.

So, after succumbing to peer-pressure, I once again went to pick up my trusty paint brush and tape measure – but first a very important question needed be asked…..which army?

The first stop was the GW website to check out the progress that had been made in my absence – and everything looked soooo good. Basically I was left with going through each army and looking at their pro’s and con’s. In the end I had managed to rule out all but Necron, Tau and ‘Nids. I was primarily a painter over a player, so ruled out the Necron (there’s only so many metallic’s I can stand). This left the awesome looking (and checking out some rules – fighting) Tau and the ‘Nids – as there is already a Tau player in my group of friends; back to the Hive it is!

Ultramarine vs Relictors 2000 point battle

With a returning Siph, and a Jedi back home from another week away, the mighty forces of the Ultramarines and Relictors clashed over the remains of the once majestic capital city, both armies searching the ruins for 5 key objectives scattered around the city. The battle took place around the heart of the capital, the imperial temple, once a proud monument of the glorious Imperium now destroyed and plundered. The temple was located in the centre of the board, just to the south of the temple stood the prominent watch tower, which in the past was used to defend the temple, and two further imperial ruins. To the north of the temple was a large medical facility, however this facility wouldn't be treating the injured and the casualties -it would become the home of more fatalities. Close by this facility there was a small ruin , on one side, and on the opposite side were two tank wrecks from a previous meeting.

The objectives were placed so that 2 were located within each deployment zone, the first within the tank wrecks, and the second in on the watch tower. The remaining three within 'no-mans-land' the third objective was located in the large crater within the temple, a forth in the medical facility and the final objective sat in one of the ruins to the south of the temple

## ... Transmission, mighty Captain Sicarius, Sergeant Daxius here, we have scouted ahead- Relictors have been spotted moving towards the capital city- towards your location, it is felt that interception may be required, ### Confirmed, we will move into position## Captain, be warned, a redeemer has been.... aarrgghhhhh---- ## sergeant!! sergeant!!###

## transmission - Relictor chaplain, the location of the critical objectives are known- proceed to the imperial temple - we believe that within these objectives is information relating to the location of further chaos weapons.. ## confirmed, we will proceed, any defence forces?## positive, we have confirmed sightings of the loyal Ultramarines.. ## will we engage?## ~~~#

The scene was set, so space marine on space marine action, Ultramarines Vs Relictors, with a 2000 point battle. We went for an objective based format battle, with the Ultramarines starting to the west of the temple, and the Relictors to the East. Both armies having new additions to the force - Siph bringing forth his Landraider Redeemer 'Zeus' and Jedi, with a 10man Vanguard squad armed with Jump packs power weapons, relic blade, thunderhammer and storm shields - how would these new units fair? Would the flamestorm cannons unleash death to all power armoured marines and how much death would the 'flying terminators' vanguards inflict?

Deployment,
Both forces deployed tactically, the Relictors positioned both vindicators either side of the temple ruins, and the Redeemer with the a terminator squad and Librarian sat next to the vindicator to the south of the Temple. Tactical squads were deployed across the field, a five man squad hiding within the ruined tanks, and a second combat squad waiting just outside the temple. A scout squad took position in the temple, larking on the balcony. An assault squad of 6 and the jump pack chaplain were positioned by the ruined tanks, and Finally two combat squads in rhinos were positioned either side of the temple- ready to motor towards the objectives. In reserves a drop pod full of a 10 man sternguard squad. The ultramarines were deployed in similar fashion, a scout squad took their place within the watch tower, combat squads were deployed in the ruins in front of the medical facility and just below the watch tower, as well as by the entrance to the temple and on the upper floors of the ruined imperial building. A vindicator was positioned to face towards the medical building, and a predator destructor facing the opposite direction. In reserve was a drop pod full of sternguard, a 5 man terminator assault squad, and then the uber unit of 10 vanguards with jump packs, as well as a captain and a chaplain with jump packs- 7 power weapons, 1 thunderhammer, 5 storm shields and 2 relic blades- potentially over 50 attacks in close combat-
Turn 1

The first turn for the Relictors saw the rhinos move forward towards the objectives on either side of the temple. The assault marines and chaplain fired up the jump packs and moved towards the medical facility, taking position by the doors. The Land Raider also rumbled forward- next from a roar in the sky, signaled the arrival of the Relictors drop pod, landing in between the vindicator and the predator. The shooting phase started with the scouts firing a krak missile into the combat squad on the top floor of the temple on the opposite side, taking down one marine, then the following bolter shots took out a second- unfortunately the squad broke and ran. The Relictors vindicator fired at the opposing Vindicator, scoring a hit, and shaking the crew. The missile launchers within the combat squads took aim at the tanks visible - each scoring hits, the first stunning the predator, the second failing to penetrate the armour of the vindicator. The newly arrived sternguard, now split into combat squads took aim at the combat squad waiting by the doors to the temple- taking aim and unleashing 10 vengeance rounds into the squad, the shooting took one marine out, however two were lost to overheating! (Siph's dice rolls returned to normal service- 1's and 2's!!)

In return the Ultramarines started with a DP of their own, with 10 sternguards ready to join the fray, landing just behind the assault marines and chaplain. the combat squads on either flank moved forward into positions to view the objectives. The vindicator moved forward slightly into a position to view the rhino by the medical lab- ready to shot next turn.. The combat squad by the ruins in front of the medical facility moved forward towards the objective. The shooting phase saw the sternguard taking out 2 assault marines, and wounding the chaplain. The combat squad by the temple doors, turned a fired the flamer into the Relictors sternguard prior to charging into them for some close combat, taking 2 marines down in flames! The squad then charged into combat, 3 marines on 3, however the UM lost the combat, failed their morale test and were wiped out by the Relictors! (oops!!, Jedi)
Turn 2

Turn 2 saw the Relictors taking a hold of the battle, with redeemer moving forward to allow the terminator squad to disembark and be in a position to charge the predator. The rhinos moved further forward towards the objectives, and the combat squads in each disembarked towards the respective objectives, each using the rhinos for cover. A combat squad of sternguards ran towards the scouts in the tower, and the assault marines and chaplain fired up their jump packs and moved away from the sternguard that had just arrived via dp, and into a position to potentially charge the UM combat squad moving towards the medical objective. Finally in the center the combat squad standing by the doors to the temple rushed through the claim the objective in the middle. the shooting phase saw the scouts taking aim at the same combat squad that they had fired upon before, and killed another member of the squad, with the redeemers assault cannons taking down the survivors. The vindicators opened fire to, the first missed its target, however the second hit, killing five of the sternguard in a massive fireball of death!
The sternguard and terminators charged into combat with the vindicator and the predator respectfully. The sternguard failed to penetrate the tank, however the tank was stunned again, and the terminators destroyed the predator in an vicious explosion caused by thunderhammers connecting with armour.
In response the UM's terminators in reserve arrived, on their table edge, moved straight away towards the sternguard moving towards the tower, the sternguards moved away from the dp, to allow them a sight of the assault marines, the tactical squad below the scouts moved slightly forward, allowing them a slight look at the tactical Relictors by the objective. The shooting phase saw the sternguards open up against the assault squad- killing another 2. The assault terminators then charged into the 3 sternguards, wiping the squad out, for the lost of one of their number.

Turn 3

The Relictors had a form grip on the battle at this point, turn three saw the Relictors consolidate their position, firstly the terminators moved from the predator wreck towards and through the temple doors, towards the central objective, also the vindicator to the south of the temple moved towards the table edge to get a better view of the sternguard situation to the north of the temple. The redeemer moved backwards also, however the assault cannons were aimed solely at the 4 man terminator squad. Other movement saw the scouts move from their position to the front of the temple on the Relictors table edge. Both tactical squads took firm positions around the objects. During the shooting phase, Siph had more luck with taking out an entire combat squad moving towards the medical facility with the combined effort of bolter, missile launcher from the combat squad, storm bolter from the rhino and the vindicator, (leaving 2 squads of troops left on the UM front) next the redeemer opened fire and killed a terminator- the terminators rolled and failed there morale test, and duly ran off the board! things were looking bad for the UM's now! to compound that the UM's were in a bad situation the sternguard destroyed the vindicator with some well placed krak grenades! The assault marines and chaplain charged into combat with the sternguards and killed another member of the squad too.
Turn 3 for the UM's saw the arrival of the uber unit comprising of a 10 man vanguard unit, attached with a captain and chaplain. The unit arrived on the Relictors table edge and straight away separated into 3 separate units- the vanguard driving in towards the scouts, the captain charged towards the tactical squad behind the land raider, and the chaplain towards the assault marines and the opposing chaplain. There was little other movement on the UM front due to lack of numbers! the only movement were the tactical combat squad moving from cover from beneath the watch tower to oppose the tactical squad by the objective, in a deadly standoff. The shooting phase saw little in the way of shooting, the marines at the foot of the watch tower fired at the Relictors, taking down one marine. The assault phase saw all the action taking place, the captain dived into the tactical squad, killing all five marines with his relic blade, likewise the combined effort of the chaplain and sternguard finished of the assault squad leaving just two chaplains alive, locked in combat. The vanguard charged into the scouts, over 35 dice were rolled just for the vanguards, with a mix of chain and power weapons, plus a thunderhammer and relic blade. the poor scouts died, with no defence. the vanguard consolidate to spread out, as Siph had pointed out that the squad was standing between two vindicators - both within range.
Turn 4

Turn 4, started with the terminators moving towards the Redeemer and embarking, the landraider then moved towards the Vanguard lurking behind the doors to the temple, in a move to prevent them from charging into the tactical squad holding the objective. The tactical squad holding the objective moved to face the opposing space marines, and the rhino moved in to a position to be able to blast them with its storm bolter. The redeemer started the shooting phase by shooting through the door at the vanguards, thankfully the storm shields of the vanguard prevented any harm, then the dice gods looked kindly at the UM's, as both vindicator shots missed the vanguards completely from point blank range! (an opening for the UM's??) The tactical squad fired across at the UM tactical marines, taking a sole kill for their effort. The combat phase saw the terminators assaulting out of the land raider and into the vanguard, could the vanguard hold fast? the combat saw bucket loads of dice rolling, and as the dust settled, the UM's had more marines standing- the terminators failed their morale check and fled towards the table edge, leaving the tactical marines in the center open to attack. The chaplain of the UM bested the Relictors chaplain, killing him with a mighty blow from his power weapon.

The UM turn 4, potentially the final turn, the vanguard swooped into the tactical squad holding the central objective, likewise the chaplain and captain reunited and charged into the medical facility into the marines holding the objective. There was shooting the north of the temple as the tactical squad destroyed the rhino with a multi melta shot, then the key moments of the battle, could the combine effort of the chaplain, captain and vanguard kill the two tactical squads holding the objectives? firstly the vanguard piled in, killing the tactical squad with power weapon ease, the captain and chaplain similarly made light work of the tactical squad in the medical facility, leaving only one marine standing.

The conclusion of turn 4 saw a roll off, to see whether the game finished- a 5, thus the game was over, a thrilling draw! The UM Scouts holding the tower obj, the Relictor combat sqd holding the southern ruins.
