Iron Warriors – Dakkabrute

Finally – some 40K!!! Ok, I’ve has this conversion sat around for about 3 months now in various stages of build and painting... I got two sets of the Chaos figures from Dark Vengeance and despite liking the Hellbrute, its not overly Iron Warrior-y and I’m not a fan of having two exact poses for such big models.
Looking through the codex, I think it is obvious the best ranged build is the Autocannon and Missile launchers, so I set about building it (hence Dakkabrute).

Rather than keeping the same pose though, I tried to change things up a bit, so separated the model at the waist (to make it stand at a different angle) and both arms (to try and make it more dynamic).
I also removed the toothed breastplate (?) and swapped the head out for a bionic one. A few of the horns from the top got lopped off and replaced by trophy spikes.
The Autocannon was a relatively easy conversion; the multimelta barrels got snipped off and glued on to pieces of plastic tubing, which were then mounted in the multimelta holes in the arm. Annoyingly, one of the tips is wonky - which I didn't spot until after it was painted...
To match the Terminator Reaper Autocannon, a close combat blade was attached to the end (a chainaxe and bayonet).
For the missile launcher, the power fist was removed and replaced wholesale by a missile pod from a Landspeeder.

Lots of greenstuffing was done to make the model fit back together again and try and give it an organic look where possible.
The Dakkabrute was then painted up to match the other one (I now have a daylight bulb - which is why these pics are brighter) although if I am honest, I’m not completely happy with how this one came out...maybe its the expanse of flesh compared with the other Hellbrute, the photos or the fact that I finished it piecemeal...but it doesn’t quite sit right with me.

the 6th degree at Red Steel Daemon painting competition

So as I mentioned in my last post, I have been busy painting up a Forgefiend for the last few weeks to enter in my gaming clubs painting competition; Red Steel Daemon, this weekend.

There were four categories:
·         Single miniature (up to 30mm base)
·         A bit bigger miniature (up to 60mm base)
·         Lots of miniatures (a squad/unit)
·         Big stuff (bigger than a 60mm base)
There were also entries for under-18 and Worthy Painting staff...but neither applied to me.

I had decided the Forgefiend and Hellbrute were being entered in the medium and large categories and my girlfriend picked some minis to enter in the single and squad categories (I wasn’t optimistic...).

There was a huge turn-out on the day with 70+ entries I think and lots of them to a super high quality.

My single and squad entries didn’t make it to the finals (I didn’t think they would – I don’t paint faces...which doesn’t help in painting comps...) but my Hellbrute and Forgefiend both made it through. I was really happy to make it through to the finals as this was my first competition, but wasn’t too hopeful on winning anything seeing as there was a massive great Ork Stompa that was really nice to compete with.

Saying that...after the final round of judging, my Hellbrute came in 2nd in the medium category and the Forgefiend took first place in the large category! Woot!

The rather nice pics are courtesy of the Red Steel Preston team (I cant get over how nice the Hellbrute looks in the pics...mmm...might have to get them to photograph more stuff of mine).

A definate shout-out should go to GreyLamb who has recently decided he actually likes painting and submitted a rather nice Malifaux diorama...I’m sure it will be up on his blog shortly.

Iron Warriors- Hellbrute

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted anything new, but I seem to have been painting constantly with nothing to show for it...mainly because I am working on multiple projects right now and am trying to finish complete units before I take pics and post them up.

The first finished unit is the Hellbrute from the Dark Vengence starter set. I had originally planned to make some conversions to the model to make it a little more “Iron Warrior” than its current daemonic/spikey appearance (despite how awesome they look), but then I managed to get my hands on a second Hellbrute – so I left this one as standard and the other one is getting converted to hell (I am thinking long-range shooty death)!
I am pretty happy with how this turned out – the metallics and chevrons turned out aged and battle-scarred and the flesh is supposed to look like something that could have once been Astartes millenia ago...
I had a bit of a play with some pigment powders on the feet and legs, to try and tie the model into the dirt of the battlefield on its base.
