Weeman hits 400!

Hi All,

A quick review post- weeman has now hit 400 posts, so we thought we'd do a quick review post so far.

Siph

Unfortunately as I write this, Siph is somewhere at sea, so in his absence I'll highlight his amazing titans, http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/imperial-reaver-and-warhound-titan.html which look stunning and are pretty potent on the field of play. Siph is slowly building a Necron army- which I'm sure will look great. On the battle front, Siph has had a rough time with 6th, with (and correct me if I'm wrong Siph) a single victory- using Lord Halfpenny's Daemon force.. My favourite 'Siph' moment was seeing his army in full during our huge Apocalypse battle http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/9000pt-apocalypse-madness-picture-heavy.html

Lord Halfpenny

For me, the highlight so far has been the conversion works that I've done, such as the master of the forge jetbike http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/wip-master-of-forge-on-jet-bike.html and skulltaker on a juggernaut http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/wip-skulltaker-on-jugganaut.html as well as my version of the Land Raider Terminus http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2010/08/land-raider-terminus-invictus.html
My favourite battle moments, firstly the apocalypse battle between me and Siph where my Ironclad took on a Warhound in CC- firstly it survived a the CC, and survived the apocalyptic explosion that resulted from him besting the warhound! http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2010/01/apocalypse-battle-report-4500-pts.html Secondly I will always remember my last battle at BW4, where Fateweaver cast Boon of Mutation on a Tervigon- and the resultant toughness test (requiring anything but a 6, Pete rolled a 6!) was failed and killed the beast along with scores of gants- swing the game to a win for me with the last roll of the dice!
The last 100 or so posts has seen me develop my daemon army- with additions of fateweaver, all 4 greater daemons,  a FW greater Lord of Khorne (to be posted soon) and 3 'lawnmower' chariots of Slaanash. I really think I've worked out a good playing style with daemons- before I would get annoyed with myself if they suffered a deep strike mishap etc- however I've learnt that weirdly that's the way chaos daemons are- random- when it works, and they work they can be deadly- when it doesn't work- its car crash tv at times..
 The next 12 months will hopefully see me complete all my daemon bases (I hate bases) then move onto a massive project- my Reaver titan..

The6thdegree

So as I look back over the past 100 posts, I think it was during this period when I really started getting into painting and trying to up my game a bit. I started repainting some of my Nids (http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/repainted-tervigon.html) , dabbled with Warmachine (http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/warmachine-khador-butcher-of-khardov.html) and Malifaux (http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/weekend-mini-project-malifaux-ramos-crew.html) and started my Iron Warriors army (http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/iron-warriors-hellbrute.html) .

I love my Iron Warriors and have been trying to slow-build the army to the best of my currently ability…which is starting to pay off with wins and top-3 finishes at painting comps (http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/iron-warriors-forgefiend.html) and having some of my minis sat on the GW Flickr Homepage for almost a month (meant to post about that and forgot).

It was pretty much over the past 100 posts that 6th Ed came out and I’ve got to so  - I love it. I think it makes for a more fluid game and there are less WTF moments than 5th Ed (like getting a million glances on a Rhino and nothing happening…). Saying that, I think its left Nids in a bit of a mono-build state (psychic powers and hordes of gribblies = good) and as much as I love the Iron Warrior fluff, the CSM codex is a bit…dull…although apparently that hasn’t affected how competitive they are…(http://weemen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/weemen-at-blog-wars-5.html).

Looking at the next 100 posts, I hope to be able to devote a bit more time to the hobby (new job has killed my free time). Expect to see lots more Forgeworld stuff being added to my Iron Warriors (I am starting to consider making half of it pure Heresy era…) and I am starting to eye up airbrushes and Titans quite a lot (don’t tell the missus). Also – Nids on the horizon!!! I’m hoping the new codex shakes things up a bit and the current rumours floating around certainly make it look like they are – in which case I have a hell of a job to go through an repaint everything I’m not happy with (about 75% of the army…).

Second Trygon Complete

What sort of ‘Nids player am I when I have only just bought and painted a second Trygon after two years??? Well to be honest I’ve never been a massive fan of Trygons/Mawlocks and whenever I have played them, they have been a giant walking/slithering target that is usually dead by Turn 2.

But...when my lone Trygon has actually reached enemy lines, its always been huge amounts of fun – and if my opponent is spending two turns of dedicating fire just to kill a single 200pts model, then it means that’s two turns where everything has advanced relatively unscathed. And that’s exactly how I’ve been playing them; as a distraction that starts on the board and runs straight down the centre screaming “look at me!” and waving its numerous scything talons.

General consensus however, is that if you actually want them to be effective and reach enemy lines, you need more than one;  to make your enemy choose what to target and hopefully force them to make mistakes. Deep Striking them will also cause your opponent to lose it – a pair pf Trygons burrowing up in your deployment zone is never a good thing (unless you’re the ‘Nid player).

Recent test games have gone pretty well – with both Trygons causing havoc when I have ran them down the board and when I have Deep Striked them.

Anyway, here’s my latest addition!

BTW – I have been testing out the new Citadel Dry paints and I love them! Drybrushing yellow onto the black carapace used to be the bane of my life and I actually hated it when I got to this stage on every model, but I have been using the yellow Dry paint and the coverage is fantastic. Unfortunately it’s more of a pastel yellow rather than the bright yellow, but only one coat is required and then it takes 10 mins to go over it all with a brighter yellow. GW – thank you!

Magnetized Tervigon/Tyrannofex Semi-Complete

After finishing my latest Tyrannofex and the last of my gaunts/stealers that needed painting, I jumped straight into the Tervigon/Tyrannofex that I magnetised here.

Knowing that I have some games coming up where I want to play the model as a Tervigon and a Rupture Cannon Tyrannofex I focused on just painting up the parts I will need now and will be painting the rest of the magnetised options at some point in the near future.

I only took pics of the Tervigon option:

Imperial vs Lots of Tyranids! Games Workshop Poole picture heavy

Last weekend my local GW held a battle that saw Imperial Forces take on the Hive Mind- including lots of monstrous creatures, including 2 of the new Tervigons, the mission for the imperial force was to destroy the 2 Tervigons. sounds easy, however the brood including several Carnifeces, Hive Tyrants, Hive guard to name a few.

The imperial force included Dark Angel, Space Wolves, Eldar, another SM force, and my Ultramarines (guest appearance by Tyberius the Wake)

Ultramarine Force

Tyberius the Wake
Cassius
5 Assault Terminators armed with Lightening Claws
Caestus Ram

The plan simple- dive in, charge and assault. The combination of Lightening claws, and Cassius met that I had re-rolls for both 'to hit' and 'to wound' on all attacks bar Cassius's potentially 25 hits with lots of re-rolls....

Lets go Nid hunting....

Imperial forces had first turn, the Caestus Ram dived onto the board to confront the Tervigon that had been slightly exposed, the 3 carnifices had been positioned to allow a perfect view of the Tervigon (lovingly called Tiffany) The caestus open fire with the Magma blaster and caused a wound, however the beast had a cover save due to the positioning of a Venomthrope, which was saved- Other attacks from the imperial force reduced the beast to 5 wounds. The terminators then launched an assault from the ram and charged headlong into the Tervigon. I positioned all units into B2B contact with Tiffany, however what I should of done is had some in contact with the Carnifeces that were in close proximity, as the resultant CC saw Tyberius slayed the beast in single combat, 5 attacks, 5 wounds...

I consolidated towards the Ram, the Nid turn saw the Hive guard fire upon the Ram, and immobilised it! the 3 carnifex open up, killing 2 terminators, then they charged into combat. The terminators faired well, and caused several wounds, however the 3 beasts weren't killed in response the carnefeices were monstrous, causing 18 wounds- however a technically meant that the wounds were only directed onto the squad, and not the IC's- thus Tyberius and Cassius remained in defiance! (this was a point that one of the other players noted and raised- as the attacks weren't specified to the Unit/IC's)

The imperial turn saw the Ram shooting into the brood, and hitting the second Tervigon, taking a wound. CC- Tyberius and Cassius managed to take further wounds, with support from the Eldar Avater. This resulted in a single Carnefex being felled, however in return Tyberius and Cassius being splatted across the floor!

The Ram spent the remaining turns shooting into the Brood, taking wounds, until the final Tervigon was killed!

 A win to the Imperial team!!

 In all, a really good battle, for which my plan of go in hard, and kill the Tervigon as soon as possible worked, if anything too well!

~~~Marneus Relicgar marched from his Thunderhawk directly towards the Inquistor-
"do you have the Relic for Me Space Marine?" asked Inquisitor Tiberius,
"I do Lord Inquisitor- we were successful against the Tyranids- and Daemons.."
"Daemons???"
"Indeed- a daemon invasion host"
"Interesting..."
"Why Inquisitor? and why did you not discuss the potential for a daemon invasion!"
"let me see the Relic..."
Marneus handed the blade over to the Inquistor....
"you are a fool Marneus..."
the Inquistors eyes turned a bright yellow colour- as he swung the blade at Marneus- who saw the swing at the last minute ducked, suffering a glancing blow- his honour guards weren't as lucky, as Tiberius beheaded two!
"the powers of Chaos will always win Relicgar" - the Inquisitor imploded, leaving a giant Daemon Prince in his place...
Seeing more Relictors charging towards them, the Chaos Prince took flight, and smashed his way out of the Imperial Fortress... I will have your head Relicgar!!!
Tyrannofex Finished
So in my last post I threw up a step-by-step of how I paint ‘Nid flesh (@ Oni: thanks for the comment – I have tried using just a green wash and then the flesh wash on some Stealers and it looks nice, I think I might use it on a few more models). Time to finish it…
After the flesh is finished, the entire carapace and talons are painted black. The carapace is then painted with purple and green streaks. I keep the paints pretty thin – the idea is not to give a visible streaking or blending, but for the carapace to appear black from a distance – but then change colour slightly in different angles/lights. Kind of like oil or a beetle shell. To be fair – its not 100% how I would like it, but its something that I can practice more with each model painted.
The carapace edges are then drybrushed yellow.
Minor details like tubes/eyes/bony bits are painted, a gloss varnish is applied, the base is painted up and Bob is your too-touchy-feely uncle!
