Blog Wars X - Iron Warriors list

Hi guys - sorry for dropping off the face of the planet for the last 6 months...a combination of work, wedding planning and a Destiny addiction hasn't left much (any) time for hobbling. That being said, there was no way I would be missing out on the Blog Wars X - so on to my list:

HQ
Abaddon 265
TROOPS

10 CSMs
140
2 Plasma Guns 30
Rhino 35
Havoc 12
10 CSMs  140

Havoc 12
ELITE
5 CSM Termis 157
4 Power Fists 28
HEAVY
3 Obliterators 210
Mark of Nurgle 18
3 Obliterators 210

Mark of Nurgle 18
HELLCULT FORMATION
20 Cultists 90
20 Cultists 90
Helbrute 100
Multi Melta
Power Fist
Total  1848

Not the most original list (pretty much the same as my BW7-9 lists) but I have to put that down to three things:

1. Lack of time to do anything else (I am struggling to get 3 Obliterators finished in time).
2. I have no idea what's happening with the world of 40k right now - from the half eye I have kept on the meta it seems the world is full of insane formations, so I have chosen something at least I am familiar with (also - my Obliterators are always the last unit standing at the end of the game, so why not more?).
3. The Chaos Space Marine codex is pretty sucky and I'm not about to start anything else.

Fingers crossed I do slightly better than BW9 (it shouldn't be hard seeing as I actually have some units this time).

See you all there!

Iron Warriors Lord of Iron (Lord of Skulls Conversion)

Hi peoples - today I am showing off the Lord of Iron; my Lord of Skulls conversion.
When Alex opened up Blog Wars 9 to super heavy Lords of War, I decided I wanted to to take one of these to mix things up (turns out its not great in tournaments). The problem is, the model is a bit meh... I really didn't like the static pose and tbh I'm not a fan of Khorne, so would have to paint mine completely differently.

So - first up, the conversion work. There were a number of basic changes and a few bits of rebuild. First up, the head; I really wanted the model to have an Iron Warriors mask, but I'm not that great with greenstuff, so ended up just using the head without the horns/trim.
One of the small circular shoulder crests got removed and replaced with an Iron Warriors skull that was greenstuff cast off of a set of Forgeworld doors.

Some Assault Cannons were cut down and added to the waist - you know, just because...

The dozerblade previously was covered in skulls and spikes, so the spikes got removed and plasticard used to make a more traditional flat dozerblade surface.

I had already decided to change the blood vats on the back and liked the idea of it being a bit of a gun-carriage, so used some spare parts from a Baneblade kit to add some Heavy Stubbers and a few missiles.A beaten-up shield from a Dreadknight was added as a trophy from its first game where it smashed apart a GK/Knight army.
Finally the weapon; I felt that the Axe wasn't very Iron Warrior-y, so used one of the unused blood vats and added a few spikes here and there. The pole is made from some spare cabling from my Warhound (which goes to show the size of some of the parts on titans...).
From a painting point of view, I treated the model like any other Iron Warrior vehicle (a tutorial is coming soon - I promise!), using the same chevron style on the shoulder pad and dozerblade to fit the theme of the rest of my army.
The model is full of vents as well,. so I really wanted to push the glowing-effects, trying to make it look like it was fuelled from within by some sort of daemon-fire. I hope it comes across ok...
Anyway, I hope you all like it - apologies for the crap backdrop, I really need to get a better photo-kit if I am going to be painting up many more big mini's - an A3 backdrop just doesn't cut it with these... As always C&Cs are appreciated.

Blog Wars 9 - the 6th degree's Summary

Hi people, we've been back from Blog Wars 9 for a while now and I know I'm late getting a report up...

How did it go? A strange combination of super fun games and awfully... Basically the great Lord of Skulls experiment was a massive failure  - but onto that later. My list is here for you to peruse.

As normal, Alex did another great job of organising the tournament - everything went smoothly, food was good and there was a really good turnout.

Game 1 I went up against Ryan with a Sisters army - madness who runs Sisters???!! The game was kill points and it was hammer and anvil deployment. I don't think I've ever played them before - so in my mind they were Space Marines with slightly worse stats and flamers. I was wrong. I have literally never played against so much AP1. I think there was something like 16 meltas, a few multi-meltas and 3 D6 shots from Executioners tanks.

Ryan set up as far away as possible, meaning the Lord of Skulls would need a couple of turns to get into combat and lots of melta went into reserve. Needless to say, by Turn 2 the Lord of Skulls was a smoking wreck, the Obliterators were obliterated and the cultists were a fine paste. Abaddon managed to drop in kill a few guys, but there are only so many invun saves you can fail and by Turn 4 I was tabled with an appalling score of around 178 - 1950.

Game 2 and I was bottom table, but at least that's where the fun games normally are. I went up against Andy with his Imperial Guard in an objectives game. Andy had a pretty rounded and fluffy list (although I don't know IG so couldn't say why...) with a few Leman Russ', Hellhounds and Vet squads. Amusingly - no melta.

Andy immediately saw my two squishy Cultist squads and tried to target them, whereas I sent my Lord of Skulls to roll around squishing stuff - which it did with aplomb! It managed to take off a couple of units a turn in a very point and click fashion, but by the end of the game we were both sat on our own objectives and Andy managed to take the win by a couple of secondary VPs.

Game 3 and I managed to move up to second to bottom table (woot), against Daniel with his Grey Knights and Inquisition. This was Maelstrom and despite lots of hard hitting units, Daniel had pretty much nothing to touch my Lord of Skulls. Daniel managed to take an early lead, getting a few decent objectives and having the manpower and armour to grab mid-table objectives - blocking me from accessing them with my more squishy Cultists. By Turn 3 I had managed to blunt his army with the Lord of Skulls, Obliterators and Abaddon, but not in time to catch up and the rest of the game was the Lord of Skulls rolling round smashing stuff again (and ending with the full 9HPs). I ended up losing about 10-6.

These three stellar performances left me 47th out of 48...not my finest hour, but I can confidently blame it on my list looking at normal results. So, why did it go so wrong? Basically because the Lord of Skulls is stupidly overpriced; it was 1013pts, for which I could literally remove any unit I got into combat with (it consistently caused around 20 unsavable wounds/HPs). Shooting-wise it looks good, but the Baleflamer Hellstorm template didn't get used until at least Turn 2 each game, which meant that Skullhurler was being relied on. Both weapons are S9 AP3, which looks good on paper and reliably hurt vehicles, but AP3 meant that I was only ever stripping single HPs and anything with a 2+ save was laughing. Oh and 65pts for instant death with the Baleflamer wasn't used once (I shot some Dreadknights with it, but they passed their saves easily).

So, whilst the Lord of Skulls was rolling around fluffing its shooting and then overkilling in combat, the other 800pts of my army was pretty fragile, unsupported and useless at claiming/holding objectives. So basically - Lord of Skulls is getting shelved until we play more Apoc and in future I will take a sensible list...maybe next time I will take a more sensible list to a tournament.

Iron Warriors (another) Rhino

Hi everyone, here is another mini that was finished before the Warhound project began but I didn't want to break up my project series for a lowly Rhino - so here it is!
This is now the army's 3rd Rhino, with a 4th counts-as so that all my CSM squads currently have their own armoured transport.
Obviously the Rhino has all of the obligatory FW doors to fit in with the rest of the army.
Not much more to say really...

Iron Warriors Contemptor Dreadnought

Hi everyone, here is another new addition to the Iron Warrior ranks - the Iron Warriors Contemptor.
This is yet another mini I have had lying around for ages - the moment Forgeworld released it, I knew I had to have it, but then the Warhound got in the way and the Contemptor was relegated for a few months.
For the loadout, I went for a combination of weapons; twin linked Lascannon, Chain Fist and twin linked Heavy Bolter - all magnetised so I can swap them out. In practice I will probably run a Lascannon/Chain Fist combo so that I have both anti-tank and CC options.
The Havoc missiles were a given - even if I don't use them, they look pretty cool.

Just need to get it into a game now!

Shadowsword - Iron Warriors

Hi guys - I have a new toy to share with you today; a Shadowsword super-heavy tank.

Its hard to tell now, but this is actually Siph's Shawdowsword that he converted back in 2009, but never got around to painting it - so I kindly re-purposed it for my Iron Warriors (not that I can really use it in games other than Apoc or 30k as Tormentor).

Siph had done some awesome work converting the tank to be 5 out of the 6 Shadowsword variants, although I ended up gluing the hull in the rear position, so its now not 100% accurate as the Banehammer and Doomhammers - but close enough for me.

I filed off the filthy imperial aquilas from the sides of the tank and anywhere else I could find them (other than the tracks - because...just no) - so it fits in with my Iron Warriors, although there is now heraldry on there.
I actually started working on the tank back in Autumn last year - but got interrupted by a Titan, so promised myself that this would my next priority to get finished.
I treated the paint job in exactly the same way I would a normal Iron Warriors tank - just like a giant Rhino really. Which was fine until I got round to painting on all the edge highlights/scratches - which admittedly took me ages.

I'm pretty happy with how the weathering came out - I was a little concerned about the sheer flat expanse of some of the surfaces; even as detailed as they are, painting them as bare steel left it looking very sparse, but that wasn't really a problem after all the mud had gone on.

I hope you like - I can't wait to get it in a game and start blasting holes in Siphs Titans.

the6thdegree - off to Blog Wars 8

Morning folks - just a quick post from me; tomorrow is Blog Wars 8 and despite only having one game of 7th Ed since its release, I will be there with my Iron Warriors - attempting to throw down with the best of them!
If anyone reading this doesn't know about Blog Wars, its a great 1 day tournament that encourages friendly gamers to bring friendly lists and friendly games. Alex from From the Fang has been organising them all himself and does a stellar job - there is always great prize support and I've been lucky enough to walk away from most events with either a podium/painting, raffle or spot prize.

As I've said, I will obviously be taking my Iron Warriors, but my personal life has taken over my hobby life recently so I am ashamed to say I wont be taking a very different list to BW (which admittedly did ok...) so this time I wont be entering the painting competition.

The list I am taking is:

HQ Price
1 Abaddon 265

Troops
10 CSM 140
10 VotLW 10
2 Plasma Guns 30
1 Rhino 35
1 Havoc Launcher 12

10 CSM 140
10 VotLW 10
2 Plasma Guns 30
1 Rhino 35
1 Havoc Launcher 12

12 Cultists 58

12 Cultists 58

Elites
3 Terminators 95
2 Power Fists 14
1 Power Sword -

1 Helbrute 100
1 T/L Lascannon 25
1 Missile Launcher 10

Heavy
3 Obliterators 210
3 Mark of Nurgle 18
3 VotLW 9

3 Obliterators 210
3 Mark of Nurgle 18
3 VotLW 9

1 Vindicator 120
1 Combi-Bolter 5

Fast Attack
1 Heldrake 170
Hades Autocannon -

Army Total 1848

The main difference between BW 7 and 8 lists is that I have added VotLW where possible, which means I have had to swap out a Heldrake for a cheaper Vindicator. I am hoping the changes to 7th Ed mech might mean that my normally dead-in-T1 Vindi will be a bit more survivable and help getting rid of Terminator squads that I inevitably seem to come up against (that the now semi-nerfed Heldrake really isn't useful against).

Anyway - fingers it goes well - a write-up will follow.

Something big on the horizon from the6thdegree

Hi folks - just a quick sneak peek into what I am going to be working on for the foreseeable future:

Yes - its a Chaos Warhound titan! I thought it was about time I joined the big boys (well...LordH and Siph at least) and started tooling the Iron Warriors up with some super-heavy support.

I am hoping to blog my way through the entire process - design, build and paint, so that folks can see how you go from approx 200 bits of resin to a bad-ass titan.

The kit only turned up yesterday, so at this stage I am still researching build tutorials and working out how I want it posed and based - so if you have any suggestions, please let me know in the comments.

In the mean time I will still be painting my way through a backlog of mini's and throwing them up on here for you to check out when I finally remember to take some pics.

Iron Warriors - Hell Blade number two

Hi everyone - today I'm showing off my second Hell Blade/counts-as-Heldrake. You can find the first here.

I've got to say, the quality of this build was much higher than the last - with less rough edges and the body only required minimal straightening - which was a piece of cake with the missus' hairdryer.

I painted it up to match the first - so now they make a nice pair.
The canopy on my first Hell Blade wasn't great - so I removed the panels to keep it open. This one was slightly better, but quite cloudy so I ended up painting the glass - it didn't turn out great, so thats something to practice some more.
The engines were given the mandatory blue OSL.

For the base, I put together a little scene with a fuel pipeline that had been taken out by the Hell Blade in a strafing run and used the old tealight and stuffing to make a fire/smoke effect and a bit of liquid water effects as some spilled fuel that might ignite at any second.
Hope you like!

BTW - does anyone have any tips for taking pics of larger models? I like to use a backdrop, but even with A3 (what I used here) it forces me to get in tight to the model to be able to fit detail in frame.

Iron Warriors - Land Raider

Hi everyone - today I am showing off my Iron Warriors Land Raider that I painted ages ago but forgot to take pics of...so sorry about that...

As with most of my vehicles, the Land Raider is kitted out with Forgeworld doors to fit in with the rest of the army.

I've added a couple of little extras to the model; some lock-boxes and fuel tanks I had lying around and a little missile launcher that can be a counts-as Havok Launcher.
The Lsscannons got a bit of blue glowing effects so that it also matches with the components of my army with Plasma or big glowy engines (that's a technical term in the grim-dark).

Iron Warriors - more MkIII Marines

These are another set of MkIII Iron Warrior marines that I though I would share. They have been finished for a while but I realised I never posted any pics of them and I am pretty happy with how they turned out.
I built these just before the MkIII Iron Warrior shoulder pads were released...which is a bit frustrating...
Managed to throw in a sly dig at the Iron Warriors mortal enemies - the Imperial Fists.

This unit actually won me best painting unit at my local gaming clubs painting competition.

Myrmidon Destructors (as Obliterator counts-as)

Hi guys - today I am showing off my Myrmidon Destructors from Forgeworld. The second they were released I knew I had to have some as counts-as Obliterators for my Iron Warriors army - and if that accidentally leads to a small Mechanicum force...I can live with that.

The really fit my Iron Warriors aesthetic that I am going for, with the robes (not dresses!), cables and big-ass guns! I can really image them being inspiration for the first Obliterator experiments.

Being Forgeworld, the casts are great, although for some reason they were a beast to glue (I typically don't bother pinning any more as I find the glue I use up to the job with plastics and resins and metal minis are all but extinct now). I quite liked how FW supply the cables in straight rods and it is up to the modeller to bend them however they want. I now just hope they make a couple more variants.
